My Approach

Welcome. I’m Amancia Young, a trauma informed counsellor in training based in Ottawa.

I support adults navigating immigration experiences, culture shock, trauma, identity challenges, burnout, and major life transitions. My practice is especially welcoming to immigrants, newcomers, first generation professionals, and individuals who may appear strong on the outside while feeling overwhelmed internally.

In our work together, we will use approaches that best support you as an individual. Therapy can help you understand your story, regulate your nervous system, and move toward a future shaped by intention and confidence. My lived experience across cultures and institutions allows me to meet you with humility, warmth, and deep understanding.

Whether you are healing from past wounds, redefining relationships, or rebuilding your life, I am here to support you along the way.

What It Is Like to Work With Me

Working with me means having space to slow down, feel grounded, and recognize that you do not have to carry everything alone.

I offer a steady and warm presence while supporting you in tuning into your body, emotions, and the experiences that have shaped your story. Together, we will make sense of these experiences at a pace that feels supportive rather than overwhelming.

I listen closely not only to what you share verbally, but also to what appears through patterns, relationships, and nervous system responses. My approach is collaborative and relational. I am not here to judge, fix, or direct your life, but to walk alongside you as we explore what has influenced your present and what you would like to shift moving forward.

If you are looking for a therapist who:

  • Brings a trauma informed and nervous system aware approach
  • Integrates reflection with practical, real world tools
  • Values collaboration, curiosity, and emotional depth
  • Works with cultural sensitivity informed by lived experience
  • Believes deeply in resilience and capacity for change

…we may be a good fit.

In our work together, you can expect a balance of insight and action, emotional depth and grounding practices. I bring honesty, compassion, and care shaped by my own experiences as an immigrant, a survivor, and someone who has rebuilt her life more than once.

My hope is that therapy becomes a space where you feel safe, empowered, and increasingly aligned with the person you are becoming.

Outside of Work

Outside the therapy room, I believe strongly in living a life that feels nourishing and joyful. Swimming is my happy place and the closest thing I have to meditation. When I am not in the water, I am often planning my next trip and exploring new cities, foods, and cultures.

I also enjoy hosting dinners with friends and loved ones. Good music, shared meals, laughter, and storytelling are deeply grounding for me.

When time allows, I volunteer with youth programs. Supporting young people helps me stay connected to purpose and community.

These moments of movement, travel, connection, and giving back keep me energized, and I bring that same steady, human energy into my work with clients.

My Favourite Quote

“Today is the youngest version you will ever be.”

This quote serves as a reminder that the present moment holds possibility. Regardless of age, circumstance, or history, today can be a starting point. It invites reflection, courage, and hope, encouraging choices that support the future you want to build.

Think We Might Be a Good Fit?

Beginning therapy can feel vulnerable, especially when you have been carrying a great deal on your own. If something in my approach resonates with you, I invite you to reach out. I would be glad to connect and explore whether working together feels supportive for where you are right now.
