Your Privacy Is Important to Us

Confidentiality is of the utmost importance. All information discussed in session will be kept confidential, with the exception of specific legal and ethical limits.

Information is released only with the client’s written consent and only to those individuals who need the information in order to provide care to the client (e.g., physician or registered psychologist/supervisor).

Limits to Confidentiality

There are specific situations where therapists are legally required to share information. The following exceptions or limits to confidentiality in therapy are required by law:

  • If there is a danger of the client injuring him/herself, someone or some organization (e.g., police, ambulance service) will be alerted.
  • If there is a danger of the client injuring someone else, the individual at risk will be alerted and authorities informed (e.g., police).
  • If there is an indication that a child under 16 years of age is at risk of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse and/or neglect, the Children’s Aid Society will be notified.
  • In some cases (e.g., child custody or criminal cases), a file could be subpoenaed by the courts.
