Common Questions About Therapy at Catharsis Psychology and Psychotherapy

The following questions address information commonly asked by people considering counselling at Catharsis Psychology and Psychotherapy. If you have a question that isn’t answered here, please reach out for more information.

Catharsis is a powerful concept that can bring a sense of relief and help us process difficult emotions. It is defined as the release of strong or repressed emotions. By allowing us to express our feelings and thoughts in a safe environment, catharsis can be an important part of healing and growth.

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the ability to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then at certain points in their lives. You already have strengths that you’ve used before that may not work when faced with certain situations. Perhaps this problem feels overwhelming and is making it difficult to access your past strengths. In our work together, we will identify what those strengths are and how to implement them again in what is happening now.

The difference is between someone who can do something and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way, teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. In addition, therapy is completely confidential.

Medication alone cannot solve every issue. It may treat the symptoms, but it may not address the source. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, analyze and understand your behaviour, and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals. That being said, medication can be effective and is sometimes helpful in conjunction with therapy.

Each person has different concerns and goals for what they would like to accomplish in therapy. Because of this, therapy will look different depending on the individual. We tailor our therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

It’s wonderful that you are dedicated to improving your mental health. Your motivation is important. We typically see each other once per week, so the work you do outside of sessions can play a meaningful role in your personal growth and progress.

Yes. Online booking is available through our secure booking system. You can view therapist availability and request appointments online at any time.

If you are concerned about your relationship and both would like to work together in therapy, couples counselling can be helpful. During this work, if one partner would like to pursue individual therapy, we would refer them to a colleague. It is generally not recommended to move between individual and couples work with the same therapist, as this can create a conflict of interest.

Your appointments and your well-being are very important to us. We understand that sometimes unexpected delays can occur, making schedule adjustments necessary. If you need to cancel your appointment, we respectfully request at least 48 hours’ notice.

Because we value your time, we do not double-book our clients. As such, your appointment is a valuable time that our team has set aside especially for you. For cancellations, no-shows, rescheduling requests, or missed appointments with less than 48 hours’ notice, the full fee may be charged.
